Cairo - 21 January 2026: Egyptians are preparing in the coming weeks to welcome Amshir, the sixth month of the Coptic calendar, a period that holds a special place in popular folklore due to its close association with major weather fluctuations.

According to astronomical calculations and the ancient Egyptian calendar, Amshir is set to begin on Sunday, February 8, and will last for 30 days, ending on the following Monday.

End of the peak cold wave

This year, Amshir marks the end of the peak of severe cold that characterizes the month of Tuba, ushering in a phase known for strong winds and storms. Historically, Amshir is popularly referred to as “Abu Al-Za‘abeeb” [Translating to: The Father of strong winds] —a nickname reflecting its reputation for intense, dust-raising winds.

The name stems from increased wind activity caused by climatic clashes between cold and warm air masses, symbolizing the gradual retreat of winter and the transition toward spring.

Agricultural significance

From an agricultural perspective, Amshir represents the true growth stage for crops, particularly wheat, as ears begin to form with the increase in daylight hours and the gradual warming of the soil.

Farmers closely monitor this month, guided by the well-known proverb, “Amshir makes the crops thrive,” a saying that reflects the ancient Egyptians’ keen understanding of agricultural cycles and the impact of weather changes on crop productivity.

Weather warnings

Meteorological forecasts urge caution during Amshir, especially for people suffering from allergies and sinus conditions, due to the expected increase in wind activity during this period.

Authorities also advise citizens not to be misled by any temporary rise in temperatures that may occur during the second half of the month, stressing the importance of keeping winter clothing on hand until the officially volatile weather patterns subside in March.
