ABU SIMBEL – 9 January 2026: EgyptAir, the national flag carrier, announced the suspension of all flights to and from Aswan and Abu Simbel airports due to severe weather conditions affecting the two cities.

In an official statement, the airline said the suspension will remain in effect until weather conditions improve.

A sudden sandstorm hit Aswan on Thursday, reducing horizontal visibility in several areas.

The storm also caused difficult driving conditions on some roads, particularly desert routes, prompting authorities to warn motorists to exercise caution, adhere to traffic safety measures, and avoid speeding.

Local authorities in Aswan raised the state of readiness to monitor the situation, with emergency operations rooms prepared to respond to any incidents and to assess the impact on vital services and infrastructure.

As a precautionary measure, the Aswan Governorate also suspended all river navigation on the Nile and Lake Nasser until further notice.
