WASHINGTON – 8 January 2026: US President Donald Trump’s administration is exploring the possibility of buying Greenland, the White House confirmed Wednesday.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said the idea is “currently being actively discussed” by Trump.

Denmark and Greenland, a mineral-rich island that is self-governing but officially part of Denmark, have consistently stated that the island is not for sale.

Leavitt’s remarks come shortly after she asserted on Tuesday that Trump is looking at multiple avenues to gain control of Greenland, while emphasizing that the use of military force “is always an option.”

The declaration has stirred sharp diplomatic objections from allies and renewed debate over Arctic security.

When asked about earlier comments suggesting the Trump administration had not ruled out using military force to obtain Greenland, she said all options remain on the table, but the president’s “first option has always been diplomacy.”
