CAIRO - 1 January 2026: Egypt is bracing for a sharp shift in weather conditions over the coming days, with a strong cold front expected to bring rain, gusty winds and a significant drop in temperatures nationwide, according to a senior climate official at the Ministry of Agriculture.
Dr. Mohamed Ali Fahim, Head of the Climate Change Information Center at the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, warned citizens and farmers that the country is entering what he described as “a fully wintery phase,” as a low-pressure system moves in and pushes severe cold back to the forefront.
Rain and Strong Winds Expected
Fahim said the peak of the weather fluctuations is expected on Thursday and Friday, when northern regions will witness rainfall of varying intensity. These conditions will be accompanied by noticeably strong winds, particularly affecting coastal governorates and parts of the Nile Delta.
“The active winds will significantly increase the feeling of cold,” Fahim noted, urging residents in exposed areas to take necessary precautions, especially along the Mediterranean coast and in low-lying delta regions.
Sudden Drop in Temperatures
According to Fahim, a more dramatic change will begin on Saturday, when temperatures are forecast to drop sharply and unexpectedly across all parts of the country.
He warned that nighttime and early morning conditions will become extremely cold, stressing the importance of wearing heavy winter clothing to avoid seasonal illnesses such as colds and flu.
“This will be a sudden and widespread temperature decline,” he said, adding that vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly and those working outdoors—should take extra care.
Guidance for Farmers
Fahim also directed a message to farmers, calling on them to exercise caution in dealing with standing crops during the upcoming weather instability. He explained that strong winds could disrupt irrigation and fertilization operations, potentially affecting crop health if not managed carefully.
The Climate Change Information Center, he said, is closely monitoring weather updates around the clock and will continue to provide technical guidance and support to farmers throughout the cold wave.
Authorities are urging the public to stay informed through official updates and to take preventive measures as Egypt experiences one of its coldest weather spells of the season.
