CAIRO – 21 December 2025: Egypt’s foreign minister reiterated Cairo’s support for a comprehensive political settlement in Libya led by Libyans themselves and based on full national ownership, during talks with Algeria and Tunisia on Saturday.
The three countries, all neighbours of Libya, held talks in Cairo under a trilateral mechanism aimed at reviewing developments in Libya and supporting the Libyan people’s aspirations for stability.
Abdelatty received Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti on the sidelines of the second ministerial conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, held on December 19-20.
The Egyptian FM said any viable path to resolving the Libyan crisis must be founded on consensus among Libyan parties, backing United Nations-led efforts and rejecting foreign interference or externally imposed solutions.
Abdelatty stressed Egypt’s position in support of a political settlement that would end division and help restore security and stability in Libya.

He also underlined the importance of unifying Libya’s executive institutions and creating conditions conducive to holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections, which he emphasized as the fundamental path for renewing legitimacy and building stable state institutions.
Abdelatty further highlighted the need for a stable security environment, including the withdrawal of all foreign forces, foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libyan territory.
These steps, he stressed, would safeguard Libya’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The three ministers agreed to continue close coordination and consultation within their trilateral mechanism.
They cited their shared responsibility as neighbouring states to support the Libyan people’s aspirations for stability and development and to bolster regional security.
