CAIRO – 30 November 2025: Egypt announced on Saturday the release of three citizens who had been kidnapped in Mali, renewing advise for Egyptians to limit travel outside the capital, Bamako, for their safety.

The release came after intensive coordination with the Malian government through the Egyptian Embassy in Bamako and other state and consular authorities, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

The hostages had been abducted by the Al-Qaeda-linked group "Jama’at Nusrat Al-Islam wal Muslimeen," which reportedly demanded a $5 million ransom for their release.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty had spoken to his Malian counterpart Abdoulaye Diop three weeks earlier, urging maximum efforts to secure the three kidnapped Egyptians’ freedom.

The ministry renewed its warning to Egyptians living in Mali to comply with local laws, carry identification at all times, exercise heightened caution, and avoid travel outside the capital to other cities currently.

Cairo continues to maintain close contact with Malian authorities and the Egyptian embassy to reinforce these instructions and ensure the safety of Egyptian residents in Mali, the statement read.

The ministry reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to monitoring the welfare of Egyptians abroad, providing them with full support and protection, and addressing any obstacles they may face.

The ministry underscored its national responsibility to safeguard the Egyptians’ rights and interests overseas.
