Egypt’s Foreign Affairs: Three nationals rescued after being stranded in river on Turkish-Greek border

CAIRO – 15 November 2025: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs announced on Saturday the successful rescue of three Egyptian citizens who had been stranded on an island in a river along the Turkish-Greek border. 

According to a statement from the ministry, the rescue operation was carried out through coordination between the Ministry’s Consular Sector, the Egyptian Consulate in Istanbul, and the relevant Turkish authorities. The citizens were subsequently returned to Turkey.

The incident follows recent appeals for assistance from Egyptian nationals stranded in the border area between Turkey and Greece, which had circulated on social media.

In the press statement, the Ministry urged citizens not to fall victim to human trafficking networks that lure individuals with promises of illegal passage to European countries in exchange for exorbitant sums of money. The statement noted that several boats carrying illegal migrants have recently sunk.

The Ministry also emphasized the importance of Egyptians residing in European or neighboring countries complying with local immigration and residency laws. It warned against risking their lives and finances and urged them not to be deceived by the false promises of human trafficking gangs.
