CAIRO – 26 October 2025: As a part of Egypt's preparations to host the 24th Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention (COP 24), which will be held in Cairo from December 2 to 5, 2025, the Ministry of Environment’s branch in Alexandria has launched a cleanup campaign along the city’s Mediterranean shores.

The initiative was carried out under the directives of Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, according to a statement issued by the Ministry on Sunday.

The campaign focused on cleaning Sayed Darwish Beach, a public beach designated for people with special needs, located in the Anfoushi area of Bahri, Alexandria.

Organized in cooperation with Alexandria University and the Alexandria Governorate’s Tourism and Resorts Authority, the event was attended by the university’s vice president, senior officials from the Ministry’s Alexandria branch, and representatives from the governorate.

According to the Ministry, the campaign aims to reduce waste pollution, particularly single-use plastics, and to raise public awareness of the environmental and health risks these materials pose to marine ecosystems.

Around 100 students, including environmental pioneers from Alexandria University, took part in the cleanup. Their participation, the statement noted, underscores the growing environmental awareness among Egyptian youth and their commitment to protecting natural resources, combating climate change, and preserving the environment for future generations.
