CAIRO – 30 September 2025: Circulated footage and video clips for the flooding in Sudan have shown the catastrophic impact of the increase in water levels from the Blue Nile resulting from the opening of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) floodgates.

Video footage, some of which was shared by Sudanese citizens on their social media accounts, and others published by Sudanese media outlets, shows the extent of the widespread flooding along the Nile, inundating residential areas, submerging homes and markets, and destroying agricultural land.
Devastating floods have swept across several Sudanese states, causing extensive damage to homes and infrastructure and displacing hundreds of families. This comes as floodwaters swept through villages and main roads, disrupting traffic and closing vital bridges.

This comes as Sudanese authorities continue to warn of worsening conditions due to continued heavy rainfall, coupled with rising water levels on the Blue Nile due to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). They have issued urgent appeals for relief teams to provide assistance to those affected, especially in severely isolated rural areas.

The Sudanese Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources has also called on citizens along the banks of the Nile to take the necessary measures to protect their property and lives, after a number of stations and states reached flood levels.
