CAIRO – 20 September 2025: Egypt has welcomed the accelerating international support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, emphasizing that it reflects the justness of the Palestinian cause.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, Egypt praised Portugal’s decision to recognize the state of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

“It is a historic step that affirms the growing international support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent, contiguous state based on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” the statement read.

Portugal is set to recognize the Palestinian state on Sunday, joining several other countries planning the same step during the UNGA this week.

France, the United Kingdom, Malta, Canada, Australia, Luxembourg, and Belgium are all planning to recognize the Palestinian state, with some attaching conditions. A UN conference co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia on Monday is expected to see most of these countries formally recognize Palestinian statehood.

This move aligns with decisions made by the majority of countries worldwide over the past decades.

Since the outbreak of war in Gaza in October 2023, Spain, Ireland, Norway, Slovenia, Armenia, Mexico, and others have also recognized the Palestinian state.

Meanwhile, the United States has criticized the recent push for unilateral recognition of Palestine, and some European countries have yet to announce plans to recognize the state.

‘Ending Historic Injustice’

Egypt emphasized that this global push for the establishment of the Palestinian state reflects the international community’s increasing determination to end the historic injustice suffered by the Palestinian people and uphold their right to self-determination and basic human rights.

Egypt reaffirmed that there is no alternative to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict except through a settlement based on the two-state solution.

The establishment of an independent Palestinian state, Egypt emphasized, is essential for achieving peace, security, and stability for all peoples of the region, in accordance with international resolutions.

Egypt urged all countries that have not yet recognized the state of Palestine to take this step in support of justice and humanity.

‘Israel’s Arrogance’

Meanwhile, the statement warned of Israel’s “continued arrogance, excessive use of force, and persistent attempts to impose a fait accompli and undermine the two-state solution.”

Egypt stressed that practices like settlement expansion, land confiscation, and forced displacement carried out by Israel “will only further fuel hatred, hostility, extremism, and violence in the region.”

The statement reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection of forced displacement of the Palestinian people under any pretext or justification.

The only path to achieving lasting peace and security in the region, Egypt said, lies in restoring the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
