CAIRO – 7 September 2025: Israel’s military asserted on Sunday that a drone launched from Yemen by the Houthis struck Ramon International Airport in southern Israel, prompting a temporary shutdown of the airport and a suspension of air traffic in the region.
According to the Israel Airports Authority, the drone impacted the passenger terminal of Ramon airport, which is located near the Red Sea city of Eilat, the AP reported.
Emergency responders reported that one individual sustained light injuries from shrapnel, while others were treated for shock.
The Israeli military stated that multiple drones were launched from Houthi-controlled territory in Yemen. Some were intercepted outside Israeli airspace, but at least one managed to reach its target.
The attack marks an escalation in long-range hostilities between Israel and the Houthis, who have claimed responsibility for several past attempts to strike Israeli territory since the Gaza war started in 2023.
In a statement posted on social media, Nasruddin Amer, deputy head of the Houthi media office, praised the strike as a “qualitative military operation,” warning that foreign nationals should avoid Israeli airports, which he described as "unsafe." He also hinted that other sensitive targets were within range of future attacks.
The drone strike comes just two weeks after an Israeli airstrike on Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, killed the prime minister of the Houthis’ government and several cabinet members.
Sunday’s incident also echoes a similar episode in May, when a Houthi missile landed near Ben Gurion International Airport, injuring four people and triggering months of flight cancellations by major international airlines.
Israel responded by bombing Sanaa’s main airport.
The Houthis have resumed attacks on Israeli territory and Israel-linked shipping in the Red Sea since Israel broke a ceasefire facilitated by mediators: Egypt, Qatar, and the United States in Gaza on 18 March.
The Houthis have repeatedly stated that their attacks are acts of solidarity with the Palestinian people and a response to Israel’s "crimes of genocide and starvation."
