CAIRO – 23 August 2025: The Muslim Council of Elders, led by Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, strongly condemned the attack on a humanitarian convoy in North Darfur, Sudan.

In a statement, the Council categorically rejected such attacks, which represent a serious violation of international humanitarian law, saying that It underscored the critical need to ensure the safety and security of civilians and humanitarian and relief workers, adhere to the provisions of the Jeddah Declaration, secure humanitarian and relief aid corridors, and prioritize the welfare and protection of the Sudanese people from the impacts of war.

The Muslim Council of Elders renewed its call for an immediate ceasefire as well as the facilitation of access to humanitarian and relief aid, and intensified international efforts to end the conflict and realize the Sudanese people’s aspirations for peace and stability.

On 20 August, a United Nations humanitarian convoy comprising 16 trucks carrying essential food supplies was struck by aerial attacks in Mellit, North Darfur. This incident comes after a previous attack on a UN convoy in Al Koma, also in North Darfur, on 2 June, said the UN Human Rights Council in a statement on August 22, 2025.

The Human Rights Council also added that brutal attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the besieged city of El Fasher and the adjacent Abu Shouk camp for displaced persons in North Darfur, Sudan, have resulted in the deaths of at least 89 civilians over a 10-day period ending on 20 August. There are serious concerns that the actual number of civilian casualties may be significantly higher, the council added.
