CAIRO - 19 August 2025: Cotton has been cultivated for the first time in Taba, South Sinai, according to a Tuesday statement by the governorate.

“Intensive efforts and field experiments proved the possibility of cultivating and producing high-quality cotton in a desert environment, thanks to modern irrigation techniques and appropriate fertilization,” Governor of South Sinai Khaled Mubarak said in the statement.

This pioneering and unprecedented step is the result of several months of tireless work, starting with the cultivation of different genetic makeups of cotton, following the growth stages of irrigation, fertilization, and pest control, according to the statement.

Finally, the harvest took only 127 days, thanks to the warm climate of South Sinai.

As per the cotton produced, it is distinguished by high quality and suitability for use in spinning, weaving, and oil production, opening new horizons for farmers in the governorate and strengthening agricultural expansion plans in desert areas.

World-famous Egyptian cotton is traditionally planted in the clay soil of the Nile Valley, rather than sandy soil in Sinai.
