CAIRO – 7 August 2025: Egypt and Uganda have agreed on regular consultation on the Nile water in order to reach an agreement for the mutual benefit and cooperation in the Nile Basin in accordance with international law and best practices.
This commitment was affirmed in a joint communique after the second round of the 2+2 ministerial consultations between Egypt and Uganda, which involved Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam, Uganda’s Minister of State for International Affairs Oryem Okello and Minister of Water and Environment Sam Cheptoris
To enhance bilateral relations, Egypt pledged to support development projects in Uganda, building on the successful example of the Owen Falls Dam and Aquatic Weeds Control Project, according to the communique.
Egypt reaffirmed readiness to finance and mobilize financing to water-related infrastructures on the Nile basin in Uganda to achieve win-win cooperation without doing any significant harm, in accordance with the newly-established Egyptian financing mechanism “The Nile Development Fund.”
Besides the Nile, the two countries agreed to bolster their cooperation in various fields, including defense, security, law enforcement, peacebuilding and counterterrorism.
They will also strengthen their cooperation programs and projects in the fields of infrastructure, irrigation, agriculture, livestock, petrochemicals, mining, construction, pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and water management.
The communique urges the private sectors in both Egypt and Uganda to increase investments and bilateral trade between the two countries.
The two sides discussed the preparations of the upcoming visit of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to Egypt to elevate the two countries’ strategic partnership and cooperation.
