CAIRO – 26 July 2025: The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by His Eminence the Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed El-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, has praised Egypt's historic and pivotal role—both at the leadership and popular levels—in supporting the Palestinian cause.

The Council also strongly condemned the recent smear campaigns and baseless accusations aimed at undermining this role.

In a statement issued Friday, the Council expressed deep appreciation for Egypt’s unwavering stance in defending the rights of the Palestinian people in various international forums. It highlighted Egypt’s ongoing political, diplomatic, and humanitarian efforts, particularly in supporting the people of Gaza, as a reflection of its enduring Arab and humanitarian commitment.

The Council also commended Egypt’s efforts in fostering Palestinian national reconciliation and unifying Palestinian factions, emphasizing that Egypt has always been—and will remain—a key supporter of the Palestinian struggle for legitimate rights and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Additionally, the Council lauded the efforts of Arab nations in supporting the Palestinian cause and urged the international community to back Arab and Egyptian initiatives aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive resolution. Such a resolution, it said, must guarantee Palestinian rights and promote peace, security, and stability in the region.

Today, as Gaza faces one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in modern history, Egypt has emerged not only as a mediator in diplomacy but also as the region’s most reliable conduit for life-saving aid.

The war in Gaza, now nearing its second anniversary, has devastated the enclave. Infrastructure is in ruins, hundreds of thousands have been displaced, and famine looms over an already besieged population. In this moment of unparalleled suffering, Egypt has once again assumed its central role—delivering humanitarian assistance, facilitating ceasefire talks, and insisting on the sanctity of Palestinian land and identity.

Since the early days of the war, Egypt has mobilized on multiple fronts. The Egyptian Red Crescent, operating under the supervision of the presidency, has coordinated the largest relief effort to Gaza since the blockade began. More than 50,000 tonnes of aid—including food, medical supplies, fuel, and shelter materials—have entered the Strip through the Rafah crossing.
