CAIRO – 13 July 2025: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sustained minor injuries to his leg during a failed assassination attempt targeting a meeting with senior officials in Tehran last month, as reported by the Fars News Agency.
According to sources, Israel executed a botched assassination attempt against Pezeshkian, along with other top leaders and several senior state officials, amid its recent strikes against Iran.
The attack occurred during a high-level meeting of Iran's Supreme National Security Council on June 16, which took place on the fourth day of the assault.
Tel Aviv initiated a war with Iran on June 13, when it bombed nuclear and military sites in Iran and assassinated key military officials and senior nuclear scientists.
Present at the meeting besides Pezeshkian were Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Judiciary Chief Mohseni Ejei, and other senior security officials.
Fars reported that the meeting was held in the basement of a government building in western Tehran when the site was struck by six shells or missiles aimed at entrances and exits, designed to block escape routes and cut off ventilation.
This tactic was reminiscent of the assassination of former Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah last year.
Following the explosions, electricity in the area was cut off, but attendees managed to escape through a pre-prepared emergency exit.
Several officials, including Pezeshkian, sustained minor injuries during the evacuation.
Fars confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine whether there were any security breaches or intelligence failures that allowed for such a precise attack.
Pezeshkian had earlier stated that Israel attempted to assassinate him.
The 12-day war between Israel and Iran culminated in a ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump, bringing the curtain down on a fierce fighting that caused fatalities in both countries.
Tensions intensified when the US announced targeting Iran’s key nuclear sites of Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan during the war.
