CAIRO – 29 March 2025: Cairo’s embassies in Myanmar and Thailand have confirmed the safety of Egyptian expatriates in both countries following a devastating earthquake that has claimed more than 1,644 lives as of this writing.

The death toll in the 50-million-strong nation is not final and has risen rapidly from 1,000 just a few hours earlier as search efforts continue for bodies trapped under rubble in the wake of the 7.7-magnitude quake.

The earthquake struck central Myanmar, near the country’s second-largest city, Mandalay, with tremors felt in Thailand, China, and India.

Footage circulating on social media showed numerous buildings leveled and people running and screaming in the streets.

At least 3,408 people have been injured in Myanmar’s most significant quake in a century, while the search for dozens more missing individuals continues.

In neighboring Thailand, which has a population of around 17 million, authorities have reported 10 deaths related to the earthquake as of this writing.

Meanwhile, 78 individuals remain unaccounted for as rescue efforts persist.

Cairo’s embassies in Myanmar and Thailand are closely monitoring the situation of the Egyptian communities there around the clock until the emergency resulting from the quake is resolved, the foreign ministry stated on Friday.

Egypt expressed its condolences and full solidarity with Myanmar and Thailand during this difficult time, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
