CAIRO - 28 March 2025: Suspected US airstrikes targeted multiple sites controlled by the Houthis across Yemen early Friday, including neighborhoods in the capital, Sanaa, according to the Associated Press.
While the full extent of the damage and potential casualties remains unclear, the strikes appeared to be particularly intense compared to previous days since US President Donald Trump announced "decisive and powerful military action" in Yemen in mid-March.
Initial reports from the Houthis indicated that at least seven people were injured in the latest Sanaa attacks.
Strikes also occurred around the Red Sea port city of Hodeida, as well as in Saada and the governorates of Jouf, Amran, and Marib.
The Houthis have reported 57 fatalities and dozens of injuries resulting from US strikes over the past two weeks.
The US bombardment comes in response to the Houthis’ threats to resume assaults on Israeli ships in retaliation for Israel blocking humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis have conducted numerous attacks on vessels linked to Israel and US warships in solidarity with the Palestinian people amid the ongoing Israeli war that began on October 7, 2023.
The Houthis have vowed to "meet escalation with escalation" and emphasized that US strikes will not deter them from defending the people of Gaza.
Shortly after the US initiated strikes on Yemen, Israel resumed its war in Gaza, breaking a two-month ceasefire and killing nearly 900 Palestinians.
To date, the Israeli war on Hamas in Gaza has claimed more than 50,200 lives, with the majority of the fatalities being women and children, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Since March 2, Tel Aviv has halted humanitarian aid to Gaza, home to around 2.3 million residents, and subsequently cut off electricity supplies to the enclave—actions condemned by Hamas as “collective punishment” for the population.
