The Sudanese army retakes the presidential palace in Khartoum, March 21, 2025 – Sudanese Armed Forces
CAIRO – 28 March 2025: The Sudanese Armed Forces have announced that they have regained complete control of the capital, Khartoum, from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
This milestone is the latest in the Sudanese war between the army and the paramilitary group, which has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced over 12 million more since April 2023.
“Our forces were able to forcibly and skilfully cleanse the last pocket of the remnants of the Dagalo terrorist militia in Khartoum locality,” said the Sudanese army in a statement late Thursday. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also referred to as Hemedti, is the leader of the RSF.
The army's offensive in the capital culminated in the retaking of key locations, including the presidential palace and the airport.
From the recaptured presidential palace, army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan proclaimed the capital "free" from the RSF.
Reports from witnesses and activists indicate that RSF fighters have been withdrawing across the city since the palace was reclaimed on March 21, reported the AFP.
The RSF has vowed to continue fighting, asserting that their forces have merely repositioned and promising to deliver "crushing defeats" to their adversaries on all fronts.
