CAIRO – 11 March 2025: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Badr Abdelatty, and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas discussed Monday over the phone Gaza reconstruction plan endorsed by the Arab Summit last week, as well as recent violence in Syria.
The minister welcomed the statement released by Kallas to support the plan set by Egypt, stressing the importance of concerting international efforts to guarantee its implementation. For that purpose, Egypt is hosting in April an international conference in partnership with the United Nations and the Palestinian government.
In a related context, Minister Abdelatty said Egypt aspired that the EU would continue to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza to enable residents face the disastrous circumstances. Thus, he noted the salience of pressuring for the execution of the three stages of the ceasefire agreement that went into effect in January.
Those are meant to accomplish the gradual release of all Israeli hostages in exchange of Palestinian prisoners and starting reconstruction, which will be carried out over around three years.
The minister further added that the two-state solution was the only pathway guaranteeing sustainable peace in the region.
Regarding Syria, the two sides discussed the violence that had been committed by governmental forces in coastal cities and that incurred the death of over 1,000, including 745 civilians. The rest were members of the former regime.
On that front, the Egyptian minister stressed the importance of preserving the unity, territorial integrity, and state institutions of Syria by launching an inclusive political process that does not disregard the rights of any sect.
