UNHCR Egypt registers over 32K refugees, asylum seekers in Jan. 2025

CAIRO – 6 February 2025: UNHCR Egypt indicated Wednesday that the number of registered refugees and asylum seekers had increased by 208% between March 21, 2023 and January 31, 2025 to record 902,700, including 32,081 who had been registered in January 2025.

 

The increase among Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers has amounted to 938% so that their number hit 630,958 making up 70% of the total. The breakdown of the rest is 144,557 Syrians (16%); 46,416 South Sudanese (5%); 39,765 Eritreans (4%); 18,047 Ethiopians (2%); 8,131 Yemenis (1%); 7,985 Somalis (1%), and, 6,841 of different nationalities.

 

The percentage of males and females are 47% and 53%, respectively. As for the age groups, 39% are aged between 0 and 17, 54% are aged between 18 and 59, and 7% are aged above 60.

 

The majority of refugees and asylum seekers are concentrated in Greater Cairo, Alexandria, Sharkia, Damietta, Dakahliyah, and Menoufeya.
