Egypt treats 103,400 Palestinians during Gaza war; 9,000 aid trucks enter under ceasefire

CAIRO - 5 February 2025: Minister of Health Khaled Abdel Ghaffar stated that Egypt has received about 103,400 Palestinians for treatment since the outbreak of the Gaza war, including 113 since February 1.

Moreover, Egypt has admitted dozens of injured Palestinians and their companions through the Rafah crossing since the beginning of February, days after a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in Gaza took effect on 19 January.

In a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Abdel Ghaffar noted that of the total cases, Egypt has received 12,300 children and provided vaccinations to 16,300 individuals against polio, measles, German measles, and mumps.

Abdel Ghaffar confirmed that 164 hospitals across Egypt are prepared to provide healthcare to Palestinians, with a total capacity of 1,656 beds for adults, 191 pediatric beds, 10,377 inpatient beds, 193 burn unit beds, and 867 incubators.

He also reported the availability of 25,000 blood bags, 150 ambulances, and a workforce of around 35,000 doctors and 39,000 nursing staff in these hospitals.

Meanwhile, the ceasefire has also facilitated a significant increase in humanitarian aid, with nearly 9,000 aid trucks having entered Gaza since the ceasefire began, as reported by Al-Qahera News channel.

COMMITMENT TO CEASEFIRE

During the Cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has reiterated Egypt’s unwavering commitment to the full implementation of the ceasefire currently in effect in Gaza, including the prisoner-captive swap.

Madbouly emphasized Egypt’s dedication to facilitating humanitarian aid access to Gaza, aiming to alleviate the unprecedented suffering endured by its population.

Additionally, he affirmed Egypt’s strong support for the reconstruction of Gaza, a sentiment echoed by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi through meetings and communications with various world leaders.

CEASEFIRE MILESTONES

Egypt, Qatar, and the United States have brokered the ceasefire agreement following over 15 months of Israeli war in Gaza that has killed over 47,000 people and displaced the majority of population.

According to UN estimates based on satellite data from January, the Israeli bombardment has damaged or destroyed more than two-thirds of Gaza's structures.

As part of the first phase of the three-phase agreement, Hamas and Israel have conducted four prisoner exchanges, swapping a total of 18 captives—13 Israelis and 5 Thai nationals—since January 19.

In exchange, Israel has released 583 Palestinian prisoners, including dozens serving life sentences.

The next exchange is scheduled for Saturday, with more than 70 captives still remaining in Gaza.

The second phase is expected to involve the release of all remaining captives, a permanent end to fighting, and the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from the enclave, while reconstruction placed in the final phase.

Egypt, in partnership with the United Nations, plans to host an international conference focused on the reconstruction of Gaza, but the date is yet to be announced.
