CAIRO - 16 May 2024: The Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population announced that Egypt has joined the group of member states of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), becoming the 29th country participating in the agency, as a culmination of the Egyptian state’s efforts to promote cancer research and prevention efforts over the past years.

The Ministry of Health and Population added that despite the great challenge posed by the increase in the population in the fight against cancer, the presidential initiatives in the field of public health under the slogan “100 Healthy Lives” confirmed the Egyptian state’s commitment to anti-cancer measures that aim to enhance prevention and treatment, and played a major role in treating breast, liver and bladder cancer.

The Ministry of Health and Population explained that cooperation between Egypt and the International Agency for Research on Cancer will include various initiatives, including the National Tumor Registry, expanding Egypt’s participation in international federations, and primary prevention research on modifiable risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes, and smoking of all types, in addition to capacity building, and research on the causes of cancer in addition to forming a code to combat cancer in the region.

In her speech, Dr. Elisabeth Wiederbas, the Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, stressed that Egypt’s membership in the International Agency for Research on Cancer represents an important step towards strengthening global efforts in cancer research and prevention, as she added: “We are excited to cooperate with Egypt in critical initiatives such as cancer registration and epidemiology.”
