CAIRO – 5 May 2023: Egypt’s Ministry of Environment, Fayoum governorate, Princess Alia Foundation, and Four Paws International have signed a quadripartite cooperation protocol to establish a wildlife shelter in Wadi El Rayan reserve.

Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, Fayoum Governor Ahmed El-Ansary, Princess Alia Bint Al Hussein, and representative of Four Paws Amir Khalil announced the first twinning between Egypt and Jordan in Fayoum’s natural reserves.

The wildlife project would be one of the pioneering green investment projects that backs the tourism development opportunities in the governorate and would help create job opportunities and protect the environment, the Ministry of Environment said in a statement.

This cooperation protocol aims to preserve biological diversity by providing a safe shelter for animals rescued in Egypt and the Middle East region, the ministry added.

The project will also ensure lifelong care for the rescued wild animals in suitable environmental habitats, provide a unit for the rehabilitation of local animals that can be reintroduced into the wild, and ensure the continuity of wildlife in Egypt, the ministry noted.

According to the protocol, a veterinary care clinic with international specifications will be provided for the continuous treatment of animals and an educational center that focuses on animal welfare issues will also be established, the ministry said.
