CAIRO – 16 January 2023: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry met Monday on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Simon Stiell.

The minister expressed appreciation for the efforts of UNFCCC's secretariat team during COP 27 that was hosted by Egypt in Sharm El Sheikh last November, as indicated in the ministry's press statement.

Minister Shokry also expressed confidence that the secretariat would continue to support Egypt throughout the year until COP 28 to be held in the UAE, inviting Stiell to meet him in Egypt soon.

On his side, the UNFCCC's executive secretary commended the success Egypt achieved in COP 27 in spite of the tough international circumstances, asserting his desire to continue cooperating with Egypt to ensure the implementation of the last summit's outcomes.

In that context, the COP 27 president, Minister Shokry, presented Egypt's vision on how to build on what has been achieved in COP 27, including the activation of the damage and loss fund, promotion of the new mitigation action plan, and enhancement of the mobilization of climate funding.

The minister equally pointed out to the importance of setting executive mechanisms that would reinforce the role of international funding institutions in climate financing.
