President Sisi stresses Egypt’s stance on protecting its water security under legal binding deal on GERD

CAIRO – 14 December 2022: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi stressed Egypt's firm stand on protecting its water security under a legal binding deal regulating the filling and operation of The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), highlighting that Egypt depends on the Nile River as the main source of water.

During meeting with members of the Republican party of the US House of Representatives in Washington, Wednesday, the US Republican members underlined to president Sisi their deep understanding of Egypt's concerns and its stand vis-a-vis this sensitive issue that has to do with the Egyptian national security.

President Sisi also stressed keenness on communicating with various circles of decision-making in the US within the framework of coordination and consultation between the two countries vis-a-vis various issues.

He said the Egyptian-US ties are strategic and strong.

Sisi said Egypt highly appreciates the role played by the US House of Representatives in promoting partnership between the two countries, noting that he is looking forward to furthering this partnership in various domains.

Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Bassam Radi said the Republican leaderships expressed honor for meeting President Sisi and stressed that Egypt is a key ally for the US in the Middle East region.

The Republicans voiced appreciation to the pivotal role played by Egypt as a cornerstone for security and stability in the Middle East, Mediterranean Basin and Africa.

They highlighted Egypt's successful efforts in confronting the danger of terrorism and extremist thought and entrenching the concepts of religious tolerance.

They also referred to Egypt's balanced efforts under President Sisi to reach solutions to various regional crises.

The Republican leaderships were keen to listen to the president's assessment of regional conditions and international issues of mutual concern.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi arrived on Tuesday in Washington DC, to participate in the activities of the US-African Summit, according to Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He stated that President Sisi intends to focus during the summit on issues of concern to African countries in light of the existing global challenges, to strengthen the African-American partnership to confront the food security crisis, and to facilitate the integration of African countries into the global economy.

Abu Zeid noted that the President's visit to the United States includes holding meetings with number of senior American officials, in order to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

It is also scheduled that President Sisi will hold a meeting with members of the American business community to discuss ways to develop cooperation in the economic, trade and investment fields between the two sides.

On the sidelines of the summit, Sisi will meet with number of heads of state and government participating in the African-American summit, in order to discuss boosting bilateral cooperation along with regional and international developments.
