Arab communications group 'fully ready' to mediate between Russia, Ukraine: Egypt’s FM

CAIRO – 23 September 2022: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has affirmed that the Arab communications group concerned with the Russia-Ukraine crisis is fully ready to mediate between the two countries.

Shoukry’s remarks were made in a meeting for the group in New York in the presence of Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov attended the meeting.

The top Egyptian diplomat affirmed during the meeting the importance of overcoming the incumbent crisis through dialogue and measures of building confidence and diplomatic paths, a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry read.

Shoukry addressed the challenges resulting from the crisis in Ukraine, whose effects extend to the countries of the region, regarding food security, hike in fuel prices, and the increase in the economic burdens.

Shoukry affirmed the need to develop a vision to face these challenges.

The Arab communications group earlier held meetings with both the Russian and Ukrainian sides to seek a diplomatic and peaceful solution to the crisis that has lasted since February.

Egypt has also reiterated its fixed stance on the Russia-Ukraine crisis calling for addressing all means leading to achieving calm in Ukraine and reaching a diplomatic solution to the dispute.

Egypt has affirmed exerting all efforts to achieve these goals in a way that spare the world the negative impacts of this global crisis.
