CAIRO – 28 July 2022: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has announced Omnia El-Omrani as the official youth envoy for the 2022 UN Climate Change conference (COP27) scheduled to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh city in November.

As COP27 president’s youth envoy, Omrani will be in charge of promoting the inclusion of Egyptian and foreign youth and youth organizations, the COP27 Presidency said on Twitter.

She will also “seek to ensure that young voices are heard in the run-up to, during and beyond COP27,” the presidency added.

“Omrani is a passionate young community leader and climate activist and has collaborated with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), World Health Organization (WHO), UN International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF), and the Official Youth Constituency at UNFCCC (YOUNGO).

She collaborated with these organizations to “ensure that future generations have a seat at the table when discussing climate action,” the presidency added.

The number of attendees at COP27 is expected to vary between 25,000 to 30,000 as Egypt is preparing its Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh to receive the participants.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Shoukry participated in the Petersburg Climate Dialogue held on 17-19 July ahead of COP27. In a speech at the high-level session of the dialogue, Sisi affirmed that Egypt will spare no effort to make the COP27 a success.

Sisi said that recent climate change reports indicate that exerted efforts are still insufficient, “and that we must save the earth for future generations.” Sisi also noted that the world needs a fair transition to green and renewable energy

“We must think about the losses incurred by developing countries, especially small countries in African countries. It is important that we think about doing more in terms of financing, as richer countries should play a bigger role regarding Climate change” Sisi said.
