Egypt hosts Africa-UN conference on oceans, outcomes to be presented at COP 27

CAIRO – 8 May 2022: The African Conference on Priority Setting and Partnership Development for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development kicked off in Egypt Sunday.

 

The conference is attended by the representatives of relevant United Nations organizations and governmental institutions, as well as the private sector and civil society.  

 

The event consists of multiple workshops targeted at developing the regional programmes and projects on the challenges pertaining to oceans. The outcomes of the workshops will be displayed over three days from May 10 to May 12, and also later, at COP 27 to be hosted in Sharm El Sheikh on November 7-18.

 

Minister of Environment Yasmin Fouad announced in April that the initiatives to be announced during COP 27 are pertaining to water; agriculture; nutrition; relation between diets on one hand, and crops, health, modes of production and consumption on the other hand; management of coastal areas as an example of coexistence measures aimed at achieving sustainable life for local residents; blue economy; management of waste, particularly plastic; and, showcasing the value added derived from waste recycling in the form of green job opportunities, sustainable quality of life and formalization of the informal sector.

 

The minister added that Egypt will also display success stories of climate projects executed in various locations. Those include small and medium enterprises as well as mega ones.   

 

Fouad asserted that COP 27 will cover climate funding, dimensions of coexistence, priorities of developing countries, updated national contributions of states, goals, and experiences.
