11 Egyptian sailors return home after stranded at Russian-controlled Kherson port of Ukraine

CAIRO – 14 April 2022: Eleven Egyptian sailor who were stuck in Ukrainian port of Kherson arrived in Egypt on Thursday on a Russian plane after coordination by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry.

Kherson became under Russian control while the sailors were on a commercial ship at the port. To bring the sailors home safely, the Foreign Ministry contacted the Russian embassy in Cairo and the Egyptian Ambassador to Moscow, Nazih al-Negary also coordinated with the authorities in Russia to bring them home.

Meanwhile, Minister of Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates' Affairs Nabila Makram has bestowed her ministry's shield on an Egyptian citizen who saved the lives of tens of Arabs including Egyptians during the ongoing Russia-Ukrainian crisis.


A statement issued by the ministry Wednesday said the Egyptian citizen, identified as Islam al Ashiry, managed to save the lives of tens of civilians and took them out of Ukraine despite the risk of war.

Ashiry said in statements during an honoring ceremony that he drove his car in rugged areas in Ukraine for three days to save the lives of civilians including Arabs and foreigners and was able to get them out of Ukraine to neighboring countries.
