CAIRO – 12 March 2022: Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Patricia Espinosa affirmed the need to encourage civil society organizations and all parties in developing and advanced countries to effectively engage in the international climate action.

As they met in Cairo on Saturday, they discussed a number of priority issues in the international climate framework, especially with regard to adaptation to climate change, mitigating its negative effects and providing climate financing.

They also discussed the need for continuing to strive for various countries to enhance their nationally determined contributions to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.

The meeting affirmed the importance attached to Shoukry’s last visit to the headquarters of the Executive Secretariat of the Convention in the German city of Bonn last February within the framework of the ongoing preparations for Egypt to host COP27 in November 2022.

Egypt’s Environment Minister Yassmine Fouad attended the meeting.

Shoukry, also President-designate of COP 27, had a telephone conversation with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Hafez in a statement.

The call tackled the ongoing efforts in preparation for the upcoming COP session.

"In this context, the UN Secretary-General affirmed the support of the United Nations system for Egyptian efforts in a manner that contributes to enhancing international action to combat climate change at all levels," he added.

The priority issues of climate action were also discussed during the call. The two sides also agreed to continue consultation and coordination in this regard during the coming period, Hafez continued.
