Egypt’s FM Shoukry, Russia’s Lavrov discuss latest developments on GERD, Syria, Libya and mutual relations

CAIRO – 4 October 2021: Egypt’s foreign minister Sameh Shoukry said on Monday that he discussed latest developments on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam [GERD], and efforts to reach a binding legal solution on filling and operating the dam.

During a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, Shoukry thanked Russia for the support that Egypt received during addressing GERD in the Security Council.  “We look forward to continue cooperation between the two countries in this regard” Shoukry said.

Shoukry noted that during their talks, they tackled a number of regional issues, atop of which is ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and reinforcing two-state solution.

Talks also tackled supporting all ways that aim at reaching a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue that guarantees the establishment of a Palestinian state within 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, Shoukry said.

Shoukry added that they discussed the situation in Syria, Libya and the ‘historic relations’ between the two countries.

He stressed that Egypt is keen on ending the conflict in Syria, achieving stability, security and preserving the country’s unity.

Shoukry expressed appreciation for the periodical meetings being held between the Egyptian and Russian sides at a ministerial level and the convocation of the joint trade committee.

Also, he lauded efforts to activate spheres of bilateral cooperation that serve the interests of the two sides and set an example of fruitful cooperation, citing Dabaa nuclear plant, the industrial zone and efforts to increase tourism traffic.

The Egyptian foreign minister said he hopes trade exchange, that was adversely affected by the outbreak of Covid 19 pandemic, would return to previous levels.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that investment projects with Egypt, topped by the Dabaa new clean energy plant, along with the Russian industrial zone in Egypt, will be fully implemented.

The Russian top diplomat said the economic government committee for trade cooperation with Egypt discussed the latest developments in Egyptian-Russian relations.

On Libya, he said the two sides exchanged viewpoints on conditions in the north African country and how regional and international partners extend help to the Libyan people.

Lavrov said his country supports Libya's election process and efforts to form a unified armed force, pointing out the two countries see eye to eye on the importance of the withdrawal of foreign troops.

The Russian foreign minister praised the UN diplomatic mission in Libya to achieve settlement to the Libyan crisis.

Egypt’s foreign minister Sameh Shoukry handed over to his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov a letter from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Shoukry, head to Russia on Sunday in a three-day visit, to meet with several Russian officials and discusses number of issues of mutual concern.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ambassador Ahmed Hafez said on Twitter that Shourky met at the start of his visit to Moscow with Lavrov and handed him Sisi's message to Putin.

Hafez said Shoukry asserted during the meeting the historic ties binding the two countries and the continued coordination between them in the various spheres.

Sergey Lavrov visited Egypt in April 2021 and held discussions with Shoukry on the updates in the MENA region including updates in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Libya.

They also discussed boosting cooperation and relations between Cairo and Moscow, and the latest developments on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
