CAIRO - 5 September 2020: Led by speaker Hanafy Gebaly, a delegation of the House of Representatives left for Vienna, Austria, Sunday to attend the fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament and the first Global Parliamentary Summit on Counter Terrorism.

Egypt’s participation in the two events is considered a good chance to exchange views regarding regional and international challenges.

It is also an opportunity to review Egypt’s visions about such issues in a way that serves vital interests of Cairo.

The conference of speakers is an international parliamentary tool launched in New York in 2000, when they first met and issued the Millennium Declaration in cooperation with the UN.

Entitled the Parliamentary Vision for International Cooperation at the Dawn of the Third Millennium, the Declaration obliges the presiding officers of world parliaments to commit themselves and their institutions to join forces with the UN to help address the tremendous challenges facing the world community.

Under the Declaration, the UN should work with national parliaments in the pursuit of peace and security, economic and social development, international law and human rights, democracy, and gender issues.

The Global Parliamentary Summit on Counter Terrorism will, meanwhile, allow parliamentarians to identify lasting solutions and make a parliamentary contribution to global efforts in counter-terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism, with robust action and a real impact on communities, in particular the victims of terrorism.
