CAIRO – 26 August 2021: Egypt’s National Tunnel Authority is preparing to receive the 12th batch of new Korean subway vehicles for the third metro line, as part of a deal to manufacture and supply 32 new air-conditioned trains for the third metro line.

The subway trains coming to the third line are part of a contract signed by the Ministry of Transport represented by the National Authority for Tunnels and the South Korean Hyundai Rotem company, at a total cost of 317 million euros + 640 million Egyptian pounds (from the state’s public treasury), equivalent to 6.361 billion pounds.

The deal includes a maintenance contract for the trains for eight years, in addition to assembling 10 trains out of the total 32 trains in Egypt through the technical support of Hyundai Rotem, and its support for local manufacturing in Egypt.

Each new train has a high-capacity air conditioning system, in addition to being equipped with a safe passage that allows the transfer of passengers between vehicles for more comfort in normal operating conditions.

Above the side doors there is a screen to inform passengers of the name of the final station before they board the train.

Wheelchairs have been allocated and provided to help people with special needs in the process of navigating, as well as providing the carriages with maps above the passenger doors from the inside showing the path through illuminated lamps to help the hearing-impaired passengers.
