CAIRO – 27 July 2021: The Egyptian House of Representatives (the lower house of the parliament) approved on Sunday an article of a new bill that regulates the protection and development of lakes and fisheries.

Article 40 bans foreign fishing boats from fishing in Egyptian territorial or economic waters, provided that the laws governing the granting of concessions for investment of natural wealth resources or for public utility are not violated.

On the following day, the parliament approved on Monday articles prohibiting draining or filling lakes that come under the supervision of the national Lakes and Fisheries Protection and Development Authority, except for national purposes.

The Parliament also approved an article prohibiting the dumping or discharging of toxic, radioactive or petroleum materials or untreated sewage water into Egyptian waters from ships or factories.

This prohibition applies to any other materials that may harm aquatic wealth, aquatic life, or fishing activity.
