The earthquake struck at 9:13 PM local time, near Cyprus and Turkey, and around 710 km away from Cairo, as per NRIAG data
In remarks to state-owned Akhbar El-Youm, head of the Egyptian National Seismic Network at NRIAG Mohamed Abd al-Hay said the tremors took place on 3:30 PM local time with magnitudes of 4.8 and 4.89 and at depths of 13 and 14.5 km.
The quake was recorded around 400 km away from Damietta at 11:03 pm local time and it was felt by citizens but caused no damage, said Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIA) in a statement.
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced that Somaya Saad, former head of the Astronomy Department at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG), was selected to represent Egypt at the International Astronomical Union (IAU)’s Office for Astronomy Outreach (OAO) from August 2021 to August 2024.
