Minister of Transport Kamel al-Wazir stated Monday that the ticket price of trains and metro will be raised by 25 percent by the end of August.
The decision follows an incident that was videotaped by a passenger, and went viral on social media.
The authority invited tenders in November 2019, and received three offers in January.
The annual expenses of the metro before the increase amount to L.E. 8 billion, while its income is estimated at L.E. 4 billion only.
The electronic portals will deduct the trip cost directly from the credit cards without having a ticket.

Cairo Metro Company spokesperson Ahmed Abdel-Hady said the company and the Ministry of Transport are still negotiating an increase in ticket prices.
