The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said its efforts led to the release of 508 Egyptians who had been held in Tripoli, in addition to 871 others detained in Benghazi, in coordination with Libyan authorities.
He made the statements during a summit in the Cypriot capital, Nicosia, which brought together Arab, European and European Union leaders on Friday.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring the incident, which involved 50 irregular migrants, including 21 Egyptians, three of whom have died and 18 remain missing.
The consultations addressed the issue of irregular migration, with Minister Abdelatty reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to addressing the phenomenon and its repercussions. He emphasized the importance of continued coordination with Greece within a comprehensive and balanced approach that integrates humanitarian considerations with economic development. He also stressed the need to expedite the implementation of the agreement on the recruitment of seasonal Egyptian workers to Greece.
The Egyptian Embassy in Athens said the incident involved 27 Egyptians in addition to five migrants of other nationalities.
