CAIRO – 5 June 2017: Take it from an Egyptian, if you ever happen to be in Egypt in Ramadan, make sure to be invited over iftar in an Egyptian house; the made-with-love meals of Egyptian homes will beat the food at any five-star restaurant.

The iftar meal, eaten at after sunset to break the daily fast during the holy month, usually consists of three main categories.

First, the Ramadan drinks. Limitless bundles of especially made drinks to satisfy your thirst for fluids and minerals after hours of fasting.

Amar El-Din: This tasty drink is made of dried apricot and olive oil. When consumed during iftar , it immediately restores the minerals to your body.

Carob, tamarind and licorice: One of these three drinks must be present on every table; they quench your thirst and boost your metabolism.

Then you go for the main meal, which usually consists of a type of soup or broth, a carb meal, like rice, pasta or mahshi (the Egyptian stuffed vegetables.) Then you find animal protein, like meat, chicken, or fish.

You can also go the vegetarian way and eat the most delicious foul (beans,)which is treated like the queen of the table, with all the different ways people spice their foul plate. It is a real indication of how creative Egyptian cooks can be, as every homemaker can create his/her own ful plate.

Last but not least, the Egyptian katayef and konafa, which are Ramadan-exclusive desserts. You will find it everywhere in every Egyptian city; the raw dough to make your own customized oriental pastry is present around every corner, stuffed with nuts or pudding and sorbet (sugar syrup.) It will surely make your day.
