CAIRO-14 January 2021: Egypt handball national team defeated Chile 35-29 in the opening game of the 27th IHF Men's Handball World Cup.

Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex witnessed a strong performance from the Pharaohs who finished the first half with a 18-12 lead.

The Pharaohs maintained their lead in the second half to secure the victory, despite the South Americans attempts to narrow down the score margin.

Egyptian playmaker Yehia Al Deraa expressed his happiness after the match, saying "The entire team did well, we did make mistakes but that is normal in the first game. We promise to do better the next time."

Al Deraa was the best player in the match for the hosts, having scored 6 goals.

Al Deraa added "I'm happy I've been given a different role as a playmaker, it's a fun position to be at because you're the main engine for the team."

Egypt plays in Group G alongside Chile, North Macedonia and Sweden.

The hosts will face North Macedonia on Saturday before facing Sweden in the last group stage match.
