CAIRO – 28 June 2017: Egyptians have always been famous for their love of sports, especially football: Egypt has a large number of clubs which vary in terms of popularity and titles achieved. These are the oldest three clubs established in Egypt:

Al Gezira

One of the most important clubs of Cairo, Al Gezira was founded in 1882 and is located in the north of the Zamalek island and is characterized as a sports, cultural and social club. Al Gezira’s basketball team is one of the top teams in Egypt.

Sporting Club

Founded in 1890, the opening ceremony was attended by the Khedive Tawfiq in its location in Alexandria. The club is one of the famous sports and social clubs in Alexandria, officially named Alexandria Sports Club. Because the club did not play football as a basic game, however, it never had the same reputation as other clubs.

Al Sekka Al Hadid (Railways Club)

Founded in 1903 and the first club in Egypt and the Middle East to have a football team, the club’s team won the Cairo area league in 1924 and 1926. It was established by a group of foreign engineers who worked in the railway workshops located in Sabteya neighborhood and so it was established in Shubra district in Cairo. The club was glorified in two sports: football and boxing.
