CAIRO – 25 June 2017: Alvaro Arbeloa, 34, announced his retirement from football Saturday after 13 years playing for four clubs and the Spanish national team, in an interview with Spanish website Marca. Arbeloa made a great contribution to the success of Spanish football in recent years.

Arbeloa joined Real Madrid at 18 from his local team, Real Zaragoza. He competed with the youth team and only played twice with the first team so he decided to go to Deportivo La Coruna. Arbeloa’s first six months with Deportivo were successful and he got the attention of the Spanish Liverpool manager, Rafael Benitez, and so joined Liverpool, where he played for two years.

He returned to Real Madrid in 2009 and, in one of the best moments in his career, he started to become one of the backbones of Real Madrid.

Arbeloa won everything with Madrid: the Spanish league title in 2012 and two Champions League titles in 2014 and 2016, making his time with Real Madrid full of great achievements.

Arbeloa played seven years for Real Madrid. In the last year he didn’t get much playing time, so he returned to the premier league to play for Westham but this year was unsuccessful, so he decided to put an end to his footballing career.

Arbeloa played for the Spanish national team starting in 2008 and won the European Cup twice, in 2008 and 2012. His biggest achievement with the national team was winning the World Cup in 2010 in South Africa.
