CAIRO_5 April 2020: England former international, Wayne Rooney, revealed that participating in 2006 World Cup in Germany was not the right decision.

"Looking back, I should never have gone to that World Cup." Rooney told skysports.

The English striker suffered a serious injury during Manchester United's loss to Chelsea two months before the tournament. However, England manager at the time, Sven-Göran Eriksson, included him in the squad.

Rooney added "Of course it's hindsight. Back then I was 20, it was my first World Cup and there was so much expectation on me."

The English player missed the first game against Paraguay but he took part in England's remaining games at the competition.

England team was knocked out of the competition at the quarter-finals after losing to Portugal on penalties. Rooney was red-carded during the game after a tackle against Portugal defender, Ricardo Carvalho.
