CAIRO – 12 March 2020: Athletico Madrid defeated UEFA Champions League title holders, Liverpool, 3-2 on Wednesday night to reach the competition's quarter-finals.

The Spanish side repeated their victory over the Reds as the first leg in Madrid ended with a 1-0 win for the Spaniards who won the tie 4-2 on aggregate.

Liverpool opened the score through Dutch midfielder, Georginio Wijnaldum, minutes before half time to equalize the first leg's result.

Both teams failed to add another goal at the regular time to send the game to extra time.

Firmino added Liverpool's second goal at the opening minutes of the first half of extra time but Athletico Madrid's golden substitute, Marcos Llorente, who scored two goals to equalize the score for the visitors.

Athletico striker, Alvaro Morata, scored the winning goal for the visitors minutes before the final whistle to send the title holders out of the competition.

"I scored and that puts us through and I cannot describe this feeling. Everyone has congratulated me. I am very happy and we're all very happy." Llorente said after the game.

Athletico Madrid became the fourth team to advance to the Quarter-finals alongside Paris Saint Germain, RB Leipzig and Atalanta.
