CAIRO –19 June 2017: The German national team managed to defeat the Australian team by 3-2 on Monday in the last game of the first round of the group stage of Russia Confederations Cup 2017.

The German team had the upper hand in the match, with a ball possession of 59 percent and 18 shots on goal versus nine for Australia. The man of the match was also named as Germany’s midfielder Julian Draxler, with three shots on target and one goal.

German forward Lars Stindl scored the opening goal of the match in the fifth minute, before Australia’s attacking midfielder Tomas Petar Rogic equalized in the 41st minute.

Moments before the end of the first half, Draxler scored Germany’s second goal in a penalty kick. Shortly after the start of the second half Germany pulled ahead even further with a goal by Leon Goretzka, the FC Schalke midfielder, in the 48th minute.

Germany’s lead seemed insurmountable until in the 58th minute the Australian striker Tom Juric scored Australia’s second goal. Germany held on to their lead however, denying any further attempts to equalize the score.

Germany’s victory places them in second place behind Chile with a tied Score, however; Chile’s clean sheet kept them on top of the group. Australia and Cameroon occupied third and fourth place respectively with zero points each.
