CAIRO – 8 November 2019: Africa U-23 Cup of Nations gets underway on Friday night at Cairo Stadium when Egypt kicks off the tournament against tournament favorites, Mali.

The Egyptian team winger, Ramadan Sobhy, is one of the key players at Shawky Gharib’s squad and the Egyptian fans count on him and his teammates to take Egypt football back to the Olympic Games.

“Our dream is a place in the 2020 Olympics and we need to give our fans something to cheer about. We are ready and focused. Our team has no superstars; we are one unit.” Sobhy told press on Thursday.

Egypt national team was drawn in Group A alongside Mali, Cameroon and Ghana in Group A.

Egypt football appeared at the Olympic games 11 times before and their best achievement was achieving the fourth place in 1928 in Amsterdam and 1964 in Tokyo.

Egypt’s last participation at the tournament was in 2012 in London and the national team was eliminated from the competitions at the quarter finals after losing to Japan.

Sobhy added “We’ve been preparing for more than a year and a half. Now we have to bear the fruits of this hard work.”
