CAIRO –13 June 2017: French defender Ibrahima Konate signed a five-year deal with RB Leipzig on Monday, officially joining the team on July 1.

Eighteen year old Konate played 12 senior first team games last season with the French second division team FC Sochaux-Montbeliard and according to the Budesliga website Leipzig believes that they have unearthed a brilliant raw talent.

The RB Leipzig sports director, Ralf Rangnick, called Konate a “young and talented player who will strengthen our defense. We are very happy that such a big talent has joined us. We hope he can take the next step in his career here.”

RB Leipzig has one of the most successful stories in football history as they started out playing in the fifth division of the German League and managed to reach the first division within seven seasons. Leipzig also came in second place in the latest Bundesliga, behind Bayern Munich, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

The company Red Bull owns RB Leipzig and the Austrian association club FC Red Bull Salzburg. Being the Austrian Bundesliga winner, Salzburg also qualified for the UEFA Champions League, which has caused a problem as UEFA regulations prevents two teams owned by the same organization from playing in its tournaments.

While UEFA warned both teams that one of them would be disqualified, it is hoped that Konate will play in his first UEFA Champions League game this season.
