CAIRO – 22 August 2019: Egypt national team captain, Ahmed Elmohamady, has signed a one-year contract extension with his team, Aston Villa.

“I think if you go and captain a country like Egypt, you have to be a certain type of character and player.” Aston Villa manager, Dean Smith, praised the team’s Egyptian defender on Thursday.

Elmohamady joined Aston Villa in 2017 from Hull City and he played a massive role in his team’s campaign to win promotion to the Premier League last season, having made over 40 appearances.

Smith added “He’s deserved it through his performances. He’s been integral for us – certainly the 10 game winning run we had last season, which got us into the Play-Offs and ultimately into the Premier League.”
Elmohamady has had a wonderful career at the Premier League since he joined Sunderland in 2010.

The manager continued “He’s established himself in the English game and in our dressing room. He’s a very well respected and a good player to have in our squad.”

Elmohamady and his teammates hope to achieve their first victory at the Premier League when they host Everton on Friday night.
