CAIRO – 4 July 2019: 2019 Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 will witness a tough clash on Saturday night at Cairo International Stadium when Egypt face South Africa.

Egypt reached the second round as group leaders while South Africa finished third at the group and reached the second round as one of the best four third placed teams at the competition.

Egypt has an amazing record against South Africa at AFCON tournaments. Egypt faced South Africa twice and both of them ended with a victory for the Egyptian team.

The first game was in 1996 AFCON in South Africa and Egypt won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ahmed Al Kass.



Both teams played alongside Cameroon and Angola at the group stage and reached the second round together but Egypt lost to Zambia at the quarter finals while South Africa continued their journey till the final in which they defeated Tunisia to win their first and only title.

their second encounter came two years later at the tournament’s final which ended with a 2-0 victory for Egypt thanks to Ahmed Hassan and Tarek Mostafa’s goals.



Egypt’s victory in 1998 final crowned the national team champions for the fourth time in the history.
