CAIRO –7 June 2017: Liverpool pulled out of the race of signing the Dutch defender and Southampton player Virgil Van Dijk in an official statement on Wednesday, after Southampton issued a complaint that Liverpool had illegally approached the player.

According to the Guardian Liverpool apologized for their behavior and confirmed that they would not approach the player any more.

“We apologize to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk,” the statement read. “We respect Southampton’s position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.”

The Dutch defender was very close to joinin Liverpool in the next few days, but Southampton requested 60 million Pounds Sterling for the player.

Van Dijk has made 55 appearances and scored 4 goals with Southampton since he was first signed on.
